1. Introduction
The first democratic election process in the DRC in over 40 years took place in 2006. At this historic juncture in the history of the DRC, the iPAD Central Africa conference and exhibition are well timed, providing ideal access to a previously inaccessible market ripe with potential. The resident-elect, Joseph Kabila Kabange, launched the reconstruction and redevelopment of the DRC under his ‘Cinq chantiers de la République’ programme.
Kinshasa, a strategic location at the heart of Africa, is a gateway to the Central African region and a crossroads to the north, south, east and west of the continent. Central Africa has vast resources of navigable water and energy. The Central African Power Pool was created in 2003 to exploit these potentialities, but there is still much to be done for the maximum benefit of the people. Minerals, vital to the development of infrastructure, are a prime focus area for the region. The DRC is also a major stakeholder in the Inga hydroelectric generation scheme, Africa’s grandest infrastructure project.
iPAD DRC 2009 provides an opportunity to network directly with key partners. The event aims to facilitate sound investment and collaboration in the reconstruction of the DRC: collaboration under one roof between government, the public sector and business. iPAD DRC 2009 is a one-stop-shop for investigating investment opportunities in the DRC and, indeed, the whole of Central Africa.
2. Subsequent publishing of papers
The official publications, ESI Africa and Mining Review Africa, have the right to publish any of the papers presented at the conference. Papers should not be submitted to any other publications without ESI Africa and Mining Review Africa’s consent. Speakers who wish to have their papers
published in the trade press or have reprints made for distribution should ensure that they retain a copy of the manuscript before sending the original to the iPAD DRC 2009 management. Authors may have their papers included in the trade press and/or distribute reprints provided:
• Publication or distribution does not occur before the presentation at the iPAD DRC 2009 conference and exhibition.
• Mention is given to the iPAD DRC 2009 management in subsequent reprints.
• Permission has been obtained from ESI Africa and Mining Review Africa magazine.
3. Hotel accommodation / travel
Each speaker is responsible for making his/her own travel and hotel arrangements. The iPAD DRC 2009 staff has negotiated discounted rates at the Grand Hotel Kinshasa.
4. Speaker briefing
Each speaker is urged to attend the speaker breakfast on the morning of his/her presentation. This allows speakers to meet one another, and in particular to meet the chairman of the day, who will discuss last-minute details and establish whether there is any overlap in the presentations. The discussion sessions require thorough preparation and above-average involvement from both the moderators and the panelists. We hope we can count on your presence during the briefing! You will receive further information nearer to the conference.
