HP Compaq 6730s Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide PDF Manual

Electrostatic discharge damage. Electronic components are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and structure determine the degree of sensitivity. Networks built into many integrated circuits provide some protection, but in many cases, ESD contains enough power to alter HP laptop parameters or melt silicon junctions. A discharge of static electricity from a finger or other conductor can destroy static-sensitive devices or microcircuitry. Even if the spark is neither felt nor heard, damage may have occurred.

An electronic device exposed to ESD may not be affected at all and can work perfectly throughout a normal cycle. Or the device may function normally for a while, then degrade in the internal layers, reducing its life expectancy. Before removing the display assembly, follow these steps:
1. Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer.
3. Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet and then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer.
4. Remove the battery (see Battery on page 50).
5. Remove the following components:
a. Switch cover and keyboard (see Switch cover and keyboard on page 61)
b. Speakers (see Speakers on page 66)

Note for the APM operating system: Even if you do not set the low-battery alarm, the charge indicator notifies you when the battery is low, and then the computer enters the power-saving mode automatically. This default low-battery behavior is independent of the operating system; so if you have set the low-battery alarm, the computer may not do what you specified. It chooses either your setting or the default setting, whichever is appropriate.

If you are using the ACPI operating system, only the low-battery alarm is available. To cause the computer to return from standby mode and resume operation, do one of the following: Press the Fn key. Open the LCD cover. Turn on the power switch. Also, the computer automatically returns from standby mode and resumes operation in either of the following events:

Dell XPS M1330 Laptop PDF Owner’s Manual

Memory Card Blanks Your computer shipped with a plastic blank installed in the 8-in-1 memory card reader. Blanks protect unused slots from dust and other particles. Save the blank for use when no memory card is installed in the slot; blanks from other computers may not fit your computer. Remove the blank before installing a memory card. To remove the blank, see “Removing a Memory Card or Blank” on page 64.

Installing a Memory Card You can install a memory card in the computer while the Dell XPS is running. The computer automatically detects the card. Memory cards are generally marked with a symbol (such as a triangle or an arrow) or a label to indicate which end to insert into the slot. The cards are keyed to prevent incorrect insertion. If card orientation is not clear, see the documentation that came with the card.
