Residential Thermostats, available for both residential and commercial heating/cooling applications, fall into two categories: Programmable Thermostats and Non-Programmable Thermostats.

A programmable thermostat is a thermostat which is designed to adjust the temperature according to a series of programmed settings that take effect at different times of the day. Programmable thermostats may also be called setback thermostats or clock thermostats.

In commercial applications, the thermostat may have no clock mechanism. Instead, other means can be used to switch between the “hot” and “cooler” settings. For example, if the thermostat is used pneumatic controls, a change in air pressure, the thermostat may choose between the “hot” and “cooler” settings, and this pressure is measured by a central authority. With electronically controlled functions on a specific signal can specify whether to operate in the “hot” or “colder” setting.
