Samsung R530-JA03UK 15.6 Inch Ultra Portable Laptops
We are looking for a large number of ultra portable laptops recently, like the 13.3in Toshiba Satellite Pro T130-15F and Award-winning series Sony VAIO Y Y11M1E. But it is in the budget 15-16in sector that most purchases are made, so today we control a very affordable newcomer: Samsung R530 15.6in-JA03UK.
Coming less than 500 pounds, the R530 Series is a step below Samsung R580 line, where the latest newcomer we’ve seen one of our coveted Recommended Award. Obviously, hardware specs are a notch compared that model with a 2.2-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 running the show. This CPU is getting rather long in the tooth, but it should be sufficient for the needs of the average consumer.
It is backed up by only 3 GB of DDR2 RAM, which is less than we used to see on laptops these days, but understandable given the price. Therefore come as no surprise that the R530 is the 32-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium rocking. Graphics are powered by Intel’s GMA 4500M chipset, which again is acceptable for daily use, but absolutely crap for gaming or 3D work.
A 320 GB 5400 rpm hard drive is adequate for storage, while a simple DVD Rewriter provides optical functions. Natural Wireless-N Wi-Fi is onboard, but Bluetooth is a new budget accident. Gigabit Ethernet is even non-standard, and you get a standard 0.3 megapixel webcam. In a nutshell that Samsung can be summarized as functional, the basics, but nothing more and for many users that’s just fine.
Connectivity is sufficiently low key setting: four USB 2.0 ports, a memory card reader, VGA and HDMI outputs for video, headphones, plus microphone jacks and an Ethernet port hardly go to the world on fire to, but the basics well enough.
As if to make up for it, the design aims for something a little exciting to offer a collection with a cover sporting an attractive combination of red and black. Unfortunately, as brilliant as always, so fingerprints, smudges and dust will be a problem. Although we do not expect brushed metal lids as the Acer Timeline series [though we hope], many laptop manufacturers could do worse than taking a leaf from the book of Sony’s here and offering a matte overall finishes such as The Y-series VAIO.[via trustedreviews]
